Course Description

This is a preliminary course for all individuals required to learn the basic stick-work components that are used in the more advanced courses that incorporate Partner work and more complex stick-work drills.

The Tao Mae Stick Syllabus utilises many techniques from the Filipino system of Kali. This highly evolved system can offer incredible benefits when practiced purely for physical, mental, and emotional development of the individual.

The first stage of any learning however, requires that we overcome our feelings of awkwardness and inadequacy when learning something new and to rise to the challenge. Learning complex stick patterns and movements requires retraining the brain, our nervous system, muscles and our co-ordination.

It is through the use of the stick and staff that we are able to develop proper body mechanics and coordination of the nervous system by training the left and right side of the body. This also trains and develops strong connections between the left and right side of the brain and may assist in greater mental coherence, and our ability to overcome trauma.

“The Four Dignities”

The Four Dignities are mythical animals in Tibetan Buddhism . These four animals: the Tiger, the Snow Leopard, the Garuda, and the Sky Dragon, are seen in the corners of many Tibetan prayer flags. Known collectively as “The Four Dignities,” they represent sacred qualities and attitudes that people develop on the path to personal development.

Tiger – Confidence

Stage 1: Fearlessness – “Not being afraid of who you are!”

True fearlessness is not the reduction of fear, but going beyond fear.

The first stage of learning requires that we overcome our feelings of awkwardness and inadequacy when learning something new and to rise to the challenge.

Learning complex stick patterns and movements requires retraining the brain, our nervous system, muscles and our co-ordination.

This retraining takes time, patience and perseverance. It requires us to face our feelings of inadequacy and fear of not being good enough.

As we cultivate determination and perseverance through the harmonisation of body movement and partner work we become competent in our use of movement and energy and we also become confident within ourselves, who we are, and what we can achieve if we set our mind to it.

Key concepts covered include:

  • Retraining the Nervous system
  • Overcoming fear and trauma
  • Mindful Movement
  • Exposure Therapy Benefits
  • Triangular footwork
  • Female triangle
  • Male Triangle
  • Lateral Triangle
